Biography :
Home address given as Middleton-in-Teasdale, Durham. Enlisted at Barnard Castle, Durham. Served with the 8th Battalion during World War One. Died in France and Flanders campaign 15.7.1918. Formerly 48573 North Staffordshire Regiment. He is buried Noyers-Pont-Maugis French National Cemetery, Ardennes, France.
'He was the youngest son of a large farming/lead mining family from the Pennines area of South-west Durham. He sent a piece of canvas embroidery to his wife, Jane,depicting the battle of Ypres, which is still in the family's possession. He was taken Prisoner of War on the first day of the Battle of Aisne (27.5.1918) and died of dysentry on 15th July, at Montherme in France. His remains appear to have been removed during the 1940's to the French National Cemetery at Noyers-Pont-Maugis.'
