Biography :

Home address given as Donisthorpe. Cecil Hurley enlisted at Ashby-de-la-Zouch into The Leicestershire Regiment in August 1914. He was initially posted to 1/5th Bn, then to 2/4th Bn, thence back to 1/5th Bn, in which he entered France on 27.2.1915. In the Spring of 1915 he volunteered to join Lt A Moore's counter-tunnelling section. He was awarded D.C.M. as a Private (L.G. 11.3.1916: "For conspicuous gallantry when he assisted to uncharge an enemy mine which he discovered tamped ready for explosion."); this event probably took place near Hooge in the Ypres Salient on 30.7.1915, as a result of which Sgt J Emmerson and Pte H G Starbuck were also awarded the DCM. In 1916 Hurley returned to normal rifle company duty. He was later promoted Corporal. He was Killed in Action at Pontruet on 24.9.1918, age 21. He is buried at Bellicourt British Aisne, France.
