Biography :

Frank Hind was educated at High Pavement Secondary School, Nottingham, where he was captain of the school football and cricket teams. He was also keen at water polo, spending many hours at the Northern Baths, either teaching small boys that game or the art of swimming. At the age of 17, he passed the intermediate science (London University) examination and was studying for a BSc Nottingham University at the outbreak of war. He was considered a potentially outstanding teacher by his secondary school headmaster, but like tens of thousands of patriotic young men, Hind gave up his career to enlist, joining the Nottingham University College Officers' Training Corps. He served in 6th Bn The Leicestershire Regiment during World War One. While attached to 110th Brigade Trench Mortar Company, he was Killed in Action on 16.7.1916, aged 19. Accompanied by a sergeant named Davies, Hind had gone out under fire to attempt to rescue a man lying wounded near Bazentin Wood. As he assessed the soldier’s injuries, according to Davies, Hind was shot and killed.
Hind is buried at Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France. He is remembered on memorials at the University of Nottingham, St Mary’s Bulwell, High Pavement School, and Rawson Street Methodist Church, Bulwell.
