Biography :
Home address given as Coalville, Leicestershire. Enlisted in The Leicestershire Regiment on 1.4.1908 ( having previously served in the Volunteer Battalion from 1896, and served with 1st Bn as Private 6736 in Boer War). Served in the 1/5th Battalion during World War One, entering France on 28.2.1915. Promoted Warrant Officer Class 2 in February 1915. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (The London Gazette 9.7.1917 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although wounded himself, he carried in a wounded officer under very heavy shell fire"). Discharged as unfit on 8.6.1918, aged 39. His D.C.M., Queen's South Africa Medal, three World War One medals, Territorial Efficiency Medal and Fire Service Medal, and several of his military documents are in the collection of Leicester Arts and Museum Service.
