Biography :
Joined the Regiment aged 17. Served in 1900 with the 2nd Bn in Egypt, and later in India. Called up as a Reservist in World War One, and again served with the 2nd Bn, entering France on 2.3.1915. As a Private he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (London Gazette 3.6.1915. "For gallantry near Neuve Chapelle on 10th March 1915, when he carried numerous messages across open ground under very heavy fire from the enemy, who were only 100 yards away. He was eventually wounded by a bomb whilst assisting to clear the enemy from trench"). Later promoted Corporal. Transferred to a Labour Battalion after contracting a severe illness in 1916. Some of above information from a private source. His Distinguished Conduct Medal and First World War campaign medals are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
