Biography :

Educated at Ashby Grammar School and University College, Nottingham, Samuel Hartshorne was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment as Temp 2Lt on 25.9.1914, and joined 1st Bn. Promoted Lieutenant 29.7.1915, Acting Capt from 2210.1916 to 21.3.1917, Capt whilst comdg a Coy 19.4.1917, Acting. Lt-Col whilst comdg 1st Bn from 14-21.5.1918. Temp Capt on 15.12.1918. Acting Major while 2IC of a Bn 12.6.1919 to 11.7.1919.
Awarded the Military Cross (L.G. 16.9.1918 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty [21.3.1918]. In command of his company and the remnants of another he beat off several enemy attacks. He showed great gallantry and fine leadership, and continued to lead his men with ability until loss of blood from a wound stopped him."). Served with both 1st and 9th Battalions, and briefly commanded the 1st Bn in May 1918. He was serving as a captain in 8th Bn R Warwicks from 3.4.1921. He relinquished his commission in The Leicestershire Regiment on 1.9.1921. On 20.5.1928 he was promoted Major in 8th Bn R Warwicks, and resigned his commission on 31.12.1932
In the Second World War, he was granted a commission as Squadron Leader and appointed to command No. 913 (County of Warwick) Squadron Auxiliary Air Force on 22 .6.1939. In the Balloon Branch he was promoted Wing Commander (temporary) on 1.9.1941.
He was also an author and had several plays broadcast on the radio in the 1950s.
His medals from World Wars One and Two and Territorial Decoration are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
