Biography :

'James' Hargrave played rugby for Leicester Football Club, making 110 appearances 1909-14 mostly as a wing three-quarter, scoring 53 tries and 163 points. He also played cricket for Leicester Ivanhoe. He enlisted on 18.8.1914 and served in 4th Bn as Private 2216. He was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment on 26.2.1915, aged 22 years, serving in 10th Battalion. On 15.12.1915 as a Lt he transferred to 2nd (Garrison) Battalion The Northumberland Fusiliers on account of a disciplinary case in which he had been concerned with 2Lt W D Bruce of 10th Leicesters. He became a Flying Officer in the RFC from 8.11.1917, and served in Egypt from Nov 1917 attached to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He arrived back in England on 28.12.1917. He moved to the RAF from 1.4.1918. He died in 1965, aged 77 years.
