Newspaper report:
'Tragedy of Soldier's last Letter:
It was tragically ironic that probably the last letter Lance Corporal Hooley Hancock (29) of Anstey received from home when fighting in Passchendaele in 1917 was from his nephew George who ended by joking - "remember to keep dodging the bullets."
For shortly afterwards, L/c Hancock was fatally wounded in the thick of the fighting heading for Passchendaele Ridge and died a week later.
Many years later, the letter - returned with other belongings to his next of kin - together with a photograph of L/c Hancock - has been donated by his family to the Leicestershire Great War History Group who had undertaken some research for them.....'
