There is an entry in the autograph book of Violet Russell, a VAD Nurse at the Red Cross Hospital in Winchester, where she recorded details of patients in WW1. One entry for 28458 Joseph Thomas Hammonds reads, 'Born 1898. From Leicester. Treated for heart problems and Neurasthenia (shell-shock). Discharged 27 January 1919 and received a pension from 1919 to 1930'
