Educated at Merchant Taylors' and Aldenham Schools and at RMC Sandhurst, 'Windy' Gale was commissioned into Thw Worcestershire Regiment on 22.12.1915. Served in MG Corps in France & Flanders (awarded M.C. 26 Jul 1918). OBE 11 Jul 1940. Commanded 2/5th Bn The Leicestershire Regiment from December 1940 to August 1941. Awarded Legion of Merit (USA) 20 Jun 1944 and D.S.O. 31 Aug 1944. Later awarded two MIDs, CB 2 Aug 1945, KBE 8 Jun 1950, KCB 1 Jan 1953, GCB 1 Jan 1954, and four other foreign awards.
