Biography :
Awarded a 2nd Class Education Certificate on 18.11.1905. Promoted Corporal in 1906, and Lance Sergeant in 1909. Served in World War One in 2nd Bn, and as a Sergeant he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (L.G. 1.4.1915 "For gallantry displayed in the operations on 23rd and 24th November 1914."). Later promoted Company Sergeant Major. He was granted a posthumous promotion to 2nd Lieutenant for conspicuous gallantry shown in Mesopotamia in January 1916. He died on 13.1.1916, aged 29, and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. Medals and memorial scroll are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
