Enlisted in 1898. Served with 1st Bn in South Africa. Recipient of the Queen's South Africa medal with Transvaal and South Africa 1902 clasps. Later awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (L.G. 2.12.1919 "During the attack on Vendegies-au-Bois on the morning of 23rd October 1918, when all his company officers had become casualties, he took command of his company and handled them with exceptional judgement and tactical obtaining his objective after being held up by considerable enemy resistance. By his gallant and able leadership he undoubtedly assisted to the successful issue out of a difficult position.").
