Edwards, Francis Hyde - DSO MC

Biography :

Francis Edwards was commissioned into the Militia in 1898; 2Lt Lancashire Fusiliers on 29.6.1901, and served in the Boer War; promoted Lt 20.7.1904. While serving in South Africa he played one cricket match for the Army there in 1905/06; served in W Africa Regt 29.5.1909-25.10.1913; Capt in Bedfordshire Regt 7.5.1913; served in 1st Bn in France. Awarded the M.C. as Capt (L.G. 23.6.1915). Brevet Major 3.6.1916. Commanded 6th Beds 3.5.1916-14.5.1917, and 22.12.1917-4.8.1918. Took over command of 1/4th Leicesters at Fresnoy on 12.10.1918. Awarded D.S.O. (LG 12.12.1919), and also Mentioned in Despatches. Major East Lancashire Regt 1.6.1920. Appointed Lt. Colonel 3.8.1923, and was CO 1st Leicesters 3.8.1923-3.8.1927. Died in the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, Hampshire, on 6.1.1956, aged 82 years. His Medals are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
