Biography :
Robert Dickings enlisted In The Leicestershire Regiment on 18.10.1928 for 9 years. He served in 1st Bn in India, probably as a bandsman, passing his 2nd Class Certificate of Education in 1929. He was discharged on 12.2.1937 and recalled for the Second World War, serving initially with 1st Bn in India as a stretcherbearer. In mid-1941 he transferred to 2/5th Bn, serving in England, Algeria, Tunisia and Italy. He was awarded the M.M. as a LCpl (L.G. 24.2.1944) for his actions as a stretcherbearer, Calabritto, Italy, on 6.12.1943. Placed on W Reserve on 1.2.1945 and discharged on 17.7.1946. Re-enlisted R/SS/4 on 18.7.1946 and reached the rank of Sergeant.
His medals (including the MM) and cap badge [photo] were sold at auction by Hansons Auctioneers for £620 on 26.7.2019.
He died in 1976, aged 63 years.
