Biography :
Educated at Charterhouse and the Royal Military College Sandhurst, Bertie Dent was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment on 17.6.1892. Promoted Lieutenant 1894. Served in Rhodesia in the Matabele Campaign 1896. Garrison Adjutant in Natal 1898-99. Promoted Captain 1900. Served in Boer War 1899-1902 in 1st Bn, in the Mounted Infantry Company, and twice Mentioned in Despatches. With the exception of a year in Somaliland in 1904, from 1902 to 1914 he served in 1st Leicesters in India, Aldershot and Ireland. Promoted Major in 1909. 1914 he went with 1st Bn to France and was wounded 24.9.1914. Awarded the D.S.O. while commanding the 16th Bn Cheshire Regt (L.G. 1.1.1918). CO of a Machine Gun Corps Battalion 27.12.1917-9.4.1918. Awarded M.I.D. six times, and Légion d'Honneur [croix de chevalier] (France) (L.G. 7.1.1919). Promoted Lt Col 25.7.1917. Awarded C.M.G. 1919; Relinguished temp Brig-Gen 27.3.1919. Commanded 2nd Leicesters May 1919-Sep 1920 in India. Appointed temp Brig-Gen 10.9.1920. Awarded C.B. 1921. 1921 took command of a Brigade in Mesopotamia until 25.7.1921. Retired 1927. Died 20.5.1960, aged 88 Bury St. Edmunds. His medals are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
