Biography :
Educated at the RMC Sandhurst, 'Jim' Darley was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment on 24.12.1920. Promoted Lieutenant 24.12.1922 and Captain 3.8.1934. Served in 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment in Ireland, Egypt and India between the wars. During World War Two he was Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished Services in The Sudan August 1939 to November 1940. He also served as Liaison Officer to the 9th Australian Division in the Western Desert. As a Colonel he was awarded O.B.E. on 13.6.1946 for his work as the senior Q Staff Officer of HQ Berlin District, Germany, in the middle months of 1945. On 23.5.1947 he was awarded US Legion of Merit (Officer) for his work as ACOS G4 (British), HQ Berlin District, Germany, Feb-May 1945. Promoted Lt Col on the Employed List on 12.4.1949. Was serving on Staff of HQ British Army on the Rhine in 1949. Promoted Colonel on 31.12.1951. Later promoted Brigadier. Retired on ret. pay on 14.9.1955, and is granted the hon. rank of Brig.
