Biography :

William ('Bill') Dalby enlisted at Leicester 1909, and was serving as a Private with 'C' Company 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment at Shorncliffe, Kent in 1909. Played both Football and Rugby for the Regimental team and rugby for Leicester Football Club 80 times from 1908-1914, scoring 26 tries and 78 points. He served in 1st Bn during World War One, entering France on 9.9.1914. Killed in Action at Guedecourt on the Somme on 15.9.1916, aged 29 years. He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His medals and a Midlands County Football Union rugby cap 1912-13 are in the collection of the Leicester Arts & Museum Service.
