Biography :

Enlisted at Leicester. Served with the 1st Bn during World War One. Killed in action France and Flanders campaign 17.11.1915. He is buried at La Brique Military Cemetery No. 1, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Further Info: Robert Cramp was the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Cramp of Leicester, and grandson of Mrs Cramp of Cottesmore. He was born on 9.5.1895 and educated at Cottesmore School. On leaving he went into the service of a Mr Clayton in Cottesmore, and was in Fermoy, Ireland, when war broke out. He went out to France on 12.9.1914 with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was killed by a shell on 17.11.1915. He is buried in Belgium, and remembered on the war memorial in the churchyard in Cottesmore.

The war diary of the 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment for 17.11.1915 reads: "‘German action with shell fire. One shell nearly knocked out one of our machine guns. Killed 2 and wounded 1 of the teams. Casualties A coy 1 killed 1 wounded B coy 1 killed’.
