Biography :
Enlisted at London. Served with the 1st Bn during World War One. Died of wounds 28.9.1916, age 20. He is buried at Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-sur-Somme, France.
Further Info: Born in Bayswater, London, son of Francis Benjamin Ebenezer "Frank" Copsey (1857 – 1908) and Alice Panks (1857 – 1904) who were married 3 Jul 1893 at St Andrew's Church, Congham, King's Lynn, Norfolk, England (second marriage for both parents). Following the death of his parents, Percy was placed in Spurgeon's Orphanage, Clapham Road, London. In 1911, was a pupil at the National Nautical School, Portishead, Somerset. Joined the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment in London signing up for 6 years on 4 Dec 1913. His Army records show that his parents were deceased on his enlistment in 1913 and that he thought he might have had 2/3 half brothers but their names and location were unknown to him. He actually had four half brothers and one half sister (my grandmother). Posted to France 27 Jan 1915 and was hospitalised suffering the effects of gas on 21 Dec 1915. Re-joined his regiment on the 6 Jan 1916 and died from wounds on the 28 Sep 1916 in the Somme, France. Buried at Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-sur-Somme, France grave 1.A.2. His half brother, 1887 - 1915 served as a Soldier (Drummer) with the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment s/n 7756 before the war and was also died from wounds in France on the 12 May 1915 and is buried at Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. Following his death, Percy's personal effects, medals and death plaque were sent to the Rev. A. G. Parry, Spurgeon's Orphanage, Clapham Road, London. His death plaque was recently sold by DYAS MEDALS - Unit 3, 42 Stratford Road, Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands. B90 3LS.
