Further info: Leonard Cooley was born in Leicester in 1872 son of John, a shoe clicker and Mary Clark. He joined the army at the age of 18 and served for thirteen years in various places around the world including Bermuda, Nova Scotia and Egypt. During the period from 1889 to 1902 he had a number of medical issues including gonorrhoea, influenza, dysentery and typhoid fever. He had a less than perfect
military record being absent from tattoo numerous times, breaking out of barracks, often drunk and not following orders. He and his wife Elizabeth Evans who he had married in 1897, were living at Rose Cottage when he re-enlisted for the war on 21st August 1914 at the age of 45. He was private 11767 in the 110th Brigade in 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Battalions of the Leicestershire Regiment. He was appointed a Lance Corporal "in the field" in France in October 1915. He received the 1914-15 star and other medals and was demobilised in July 1919. He and his wife were living at Lake Cottage in 1929. Leonard died in Leicester in 1938.
