Chilton, Albert Daffurn - MBE

Biography :

Albert Chilton joined 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment at Athlone, Ireland, in 1920 as a Private. Promoted on 26.11.1928 to Company Quarter Master in 1st Bn in India, then promoted to Orderly Room Sergeant on 2.10.1934 while serving in 2nd Bn in Londonderry. Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. From Nov 1936 he was serving as ORQMS at the Depot. He was commisssioned Lt QM into the General List on 10.1.1940, initially posted to a Holding Battalion in Southern England. He transferred to The Essex Regiment on 9.10.1940 and then transferred to the Army Air Corps (Parachute Regiment) on 10.12.1942. In Dec 1944 he was appointed Camp Commandant of Parachute Training School at Ringway. In Mar 1945 he was promoted Temporary Major to command all Airborne Transit Camps. In June 1945 he was selected as Camp Commandant of HQ Airborne Corps in India. He relinquished his QM commission on 30.9.1946 and was granted a Temporary Commission in The Royal Leicestershire Regiment in Nov 1946. He was Adjutant, 17 Primary Training Centre/Depot R Leicesters, Leicester 1946-52 for which service he was awarded the M.B.E. (L.G. 7.6.1951). In 1952 he was appointed Staff Captain at HQ Bicester Garrison. With a Short Service Commission he was promoted Major on 18.9.1953, and retired on 30.9.1954, being granted the honorary rank of Major. General Secretary of Leicester Football Club from 1954-65.
He died in 1970, aged 67 years.
