Biography :

Educated at Sherborne School and RMC Sandhurst, Donald Carden was commissioned 2nd Lt into The Leicestershire Regiment on 30.1.1936, and served in 1st Bn in India. Promoted to Lieutenant 30.1.1939. Noted as a good rugby player. As a Lieutenant in 2nd Bn he served in Palestine in 1939, and for distinguished service in the Middle East 1940/41 he was Mentioned in Despatches (L.G. 8.7.1941). As Captain, he served in 2nd Bn in Crete in 1941. In the same year as "C" Company Commander he served again in Palestine and Syria. Attended the Army Staff College, and then on the Staff at HQ MELF. He served at the War Office in 1946 and 1947, and then as a Major in 1st R Lincolns 1948-1952 in Egypt. Attended Joint Service Staff College 1953. Was a Company Commander in 1st Bn in Germany in 1954. Commanded the Depot 1955-57; his time in command ended with the Depot winning the Maxse Cup for the first time since its inception in 1921 (awarded annually to the Infantry Depot within Northern Command which achieved the best shooting and recruiting figures). In April 1957 he refereed the Army Rugby Cup Final. Promoted Lt Col on the Employed List on 16.2.1958. CO 2 Mobile Bn Aden Levies 1958-60, and then at School of Infantry, Warminster. Promoted Colonel 12.5.1963. Military Attaché Baghdad 1962-65. Awarded the C.B.E. for his work as Commander, Advance Base, Belgium,1967-68 (L.G. 1.1.1969). Defence Attaché in Nicosia 1969-71. Retired on 12.8.1971.
