Burdett, James Charles - DSO MC

Biography :
Educated at Oakham School, Jimmy Burdett played rugby for Leicester Football Club (for whom he made 108 1st XV appearances 1903-12, scoring 12 tries and 36 points, and being Captain 9 times in 1911/12). He also played for the Midlands, the Barbarian F C (three times 1912-13), and was an England triallist. He enlisted in the U.P.S. in 1914 and, after being commissioned, he served with 6th Bn in World War One, entering France on 28.12.1915. Promoted Lt 19.1.1915. Promoted Major 6.4.1917, and commanded the Battalion from 25.8.1918 until it was demobilised in 1919. Awarded the M.C. (L.G. 4.6.1917), D.S.O. (L.G. 1.1.1919), Mentioned in Despatches, and the French Legion d'Honneur [Croix de Chevalier] (L.G. 17.8.1918). Relinquished his commission on 6.10.1920. Became a Major in 4th Bn on 29.7.1921 and resigned his commission on 17.2.1922. He died in 1966 aged 82 years. His brother Capt J W Burdett MC also served in 6th Bn.
