Biography :
Educated at King's School, Canterbury, at the outbreak of the Second World War Tim Biron was in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka) as a member of the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps. He enlisted in The Rifle Brigade and fought in the ranks of its 2nd Bn in the Western Desert. After OCTU in Egypt, on 2.3.1941 he was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment, and spent much of the remainder of the war in 2nd Bn, in the Middle East, Ceylon, India and Burma (Chindits). Awarded the M.C. for actions as a platoon commander in Syria, Jun/Jul 1941 (L.G. 12.2.1942), with which he was invested by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in Ceylon in June 1942. In the Chindits he commanded the reconnaissance platoon of one of the Bn's two columns. After Burma he returned to UK as a weapons instructor and was demobilised in 1946. He was a cousin of Henry Biron Thomas, a fellow officer in 2nd Leicesters. After a career in Shell, Tim Biron retired to Sussex to farm cattle, and was active in church affairs and The Royal British Legion. In 2001 he most helpfully provided an index of names to accompany Underhill's 'History of The Royal Leicestershire Regiment 1928-56'. He died in 2004.
