Biography :

William Berridge enlisted in The Leicestershire Regiment on 18.1.1915. Served with the 1/5th Bn. As a Sergeant, he was awarded the Military Medal (L.G. 28.08.1916), most probably for the action at Gommecourt on the first day of the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1.7.1916. Commissioned in September 1917. Awarded M.C. as 2Lt (L.G. 26.7.1918 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while raiding an enemy post. By daring patrol work beforehand he gathered sufficient information of the enemy lines to enable him to rush the enemy post, capture a prisoner, and bring the raiding party back, without a casualty in under five minutes."). Died of influenza at Shepshed, Leicestershire, on 15.2.1919, aged 33, and is buried at Shepshed Cemetery, Leicestershire.
