Biography :

Enlisted at Hinckley, Leicestershire. Home address given as Burbage, Leicestershire. Served with the 1/5th Bn during World War One. Died of wounds in France and Flanders campaign 8.7.1916, aged 25. He is buried at Le Treport Military Cemetery, France.

Further Info: Jack Alsop was born in Saddington, Leicestershire a 24 year old Baker at the Burbage Corporation Bakery he enlisted at Hinckley for the 1/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment 18th November 1914 and served in France from 18th August 1915 (1914/15 Star). Mortally wounded on 1.7.1916 the first day of the Somme offensive gun shot wound to head whilst serving with …D‘ Company, he was admitted first to 1/3 North Midland Field Ambulance and the same day 20 Casualty Clearing Station. Admitted to 7 Canadian General Hospital Le Treport 2nd July 1916 he died a week later on 8.7.1916 aged 25 years.

The 1/5th Leicesters were part of 138th Brigade 46th (North Midland) Division. At midnight on 30th June 1916 …A‘ and …D‘ Companies were in the dug outs and cellars of Foncquevillers, the remainder in the assembly position in Midland Trench. Took part in the attack on Gommecourt 1st July and ordered to dig a communication trench across No Man‘s Land parallel to Foncquevillers-Gommecourt Road. Work soon stopped due to heavy enemy shelling and then assisted in 137th Brigad‘s assault. The attack was held up and came to a standstill, the Leicesters now ordered to hold our front line and clear the dead and wounded.

The son of Richard and Mary Jane Alsop of Saddington, Leicestershire he now rests in the Le Treport Military Cemetery, France. He is commemorated on the Burbage Wesley Chapel, Day & Sunday Schools Memorial.
