Agombar, Charles John

Rank : Private

Army Number : 202647

Unit : 7th Bn

Biography :

Enlisted at Paddington, London. Served with the 7th Bn during World War One. Killed in action France and Flanders campaign 23.10.1918, aged 28. He is buried at Amerval Communal Cemetery Extension, Solesmes, Nord, France.

Further Info: Charles was of Hugenot descent and died in the Battle of the Selle a few kilometres north of the original home of the Agombars (French name Hagombart) which was Brancourt le Grand. His 10th great Grandfather fled the persecution following the edict of Fontainebleu 1689 and arrived in London with his son and grandson. Charles died relieving his original home land from persecution by Nazis and was the first descendant since 1689 to set fool on his family's home soil so close to their original farmstead in over 400 years. He was probably oblivious to this irony.
