Adams, Alfred - DCM

Biography :

Alfred Adams served in 7th Bn The Leicestershire Regiment in World War One, entering France on 29.7.1915. He took part in the battle of Bazentin Wood in mid-July 1916. Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (L.G. 18.1.1919, p.988). Awarded the D.C.M. for his enduring conduct in the war (L.G. 11.3.1920, p.3008: "For marked gallantry and devotion to duty. As signalling sergeant he has done excellent in the line. At all times when the battalion has reached its objective, in a very short time he had communication with companies. He set a fine example to his section during heavy bombardments. He has served the battalion since July 1915."). He was a member of the Army Temperance Association and was awarded a medal. He was discharged on 7.3.1919. In World War Two he served as Lieutenant in the Home Guard. He died in 1987, aged 92 years.

Medals: DCM, 1914-15 Star, War Medal, Victory Medal. His medals are on display at the Loughborough Carillon Tower and War Museum.
Also on display is his razor in a case struck by a bullet whilst in his pocket.
