Served in the Regiment during WWI.
His entry in "Rutland and the Great War" reads : Clarke, Pte. William Jas., was the husband of Mrs. K.A. Clarke of Belton, where he was born on the 15th March, 1881. He was a carpenter before entering the Army on November 8th, 1916, joining the 8th Leicestershires, and being subsequently transferred to the 1/4th Batt. He proceeded to France on the 13th January, 1917, and on April 22nd following was killed by a sniper. He leaves two children."

Tugby & Keythorpe WW1:
He was born in March 1881 in Belton Rutland, the son of William Clarke a baker, born 1854 in Market Deeping, Lincs and his wife Mary Ann, born 1860 in Fletton, Hunts. In1901 he was an apprentice with his uncle, a carpenter in Medbourne. He married Kate Annie Stevenson in Belton in 1909 and moved to Tugby where a son, William George, was born in May 1910, followed by Richard in August 1911. William becamea Tugby Parish Councillor in March 1913 and enlisted in 1916. He joined the 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment as private 33374 but was transferred to the 1 / 4 Battalion as private 235014 before embarking for France on the 13th January 1917. William, who fought in the Battle of Arras, was killed by a sniper on 22nd April and is recorded on Bay 5 of the Arras Memorial in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery.
