Biography :

Educated at Bedford School and Eaton Hall OCS (where he was badged Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment), John Jones was granted a National Service commission in The Royal Norfolk Regiment as 2Lt on 6.5.1950, and posted to The Jamaica Battalion in Jamaica. Promoted Lt on 3.1.1952. Converted to Regular Commission in The Royal Norfolk Regiment on 26.4.1952, and posted to Depot R Norfolk. While there he was awarded the M.B.E. "in recognition of gallantry in connection with the East Coast Floods of February 1953" (L.G. 28.4.1953); as a consequence he acquired the nickname 'Sandbag Jones'. Served as MTO 1st R Norfolk in Colchester from May 1954 until Oct 1955, and moved with the Bn to Cyprus during the Cyprus Emergency confronting EOKA, becoming 2IC B Coy there and at Iserlohn in 1956-57. Promoted Captain on 19.9.1957. In Dec 1957 posted as Staff Captain Q Ops in HQ 2nd Infantry Division in Hilden, near Dusseldorf for a year and returned to 1st R Norfolk and on into 1/1st E Anglian in Berlin. In Jan 1960 posted as Staff Capatain Q(Qtg) in HQ British Forces Aden Peninsular (which later became HQ Middle East Command). Dec 1962-65 Adjutant of 4th R Norfolk (TA) at Norwich. 1965/66 Military Intelligence Officer at Kuching in Sarawak during the Indonesian Confrontation. Commanded A Coy 4th R Anglian 1967-69 in Malta, Libya and Gillingham. A good hockey player, he also played cricket for the Army (Malta) in 1967 and 1968. Then served as DAAG (Secondment Policy) in the MOD, and Regtl Recruiting Officer R Anglian at Bassingbourn. Promoted Lt Col on 30.6.1973 and appointed GSO1 (Int) HQ Northern Ireland from May 1973 to 1975. AA&QMG in HQ Wales from 1975 to 1977, and CRLS Wales 1977 to 1980, and HQ Western District as a Special List Lt Col 1980 to 1982, and then retired from the Regular Army on 11.10.1982, whereafter he used the surname Garton Jones. Spent two years as Bursar of the Outbound Wales, and then RO3 in HQ Queens Division for one year and then RO2 in HQ Western District in Shrewsbury. Spent 10 years as Vice Chairman of two Lloyds Names Defence Groups. In 2008 established a Group in Shropshire of The Philosophical Society of England.
