Biography :
Alan Cowan was commissioned into The Rifle Brigade (RB) on 26.9.1942, and served in 2 RB in Italy in 1944-45; awarded Mention in Despatches for his work as Bn Intelligence Officer, 2nd RB, Italy (L.G. 29.11.1945). Served in 1st RB in Kenya. Awarded M.B.E for work as Military Assistant to Vice-Chief of the Imperial General Staff, War Office (L.G. 2.1.1956). Last CO of 1st R Leicesters and first CO 4th R Anglian 1963-66. Colonel A, HQ UKLF, Wilton 1974-76. Commander 8th Infantry Brigade, Londonderry. Later worked as a senior civil servant in the Northern Ireland Office. Awarded C.B.E. (Civil) as Secretary, Government Hospitality Fund, Foreign Office, Whitehall (L.G. 31.12.1991). He died in 1999, aged 75 years. There is a brass memorial plaque to his memory in the Regimental Chapel in Leicester Cathedral.
