Stock, Ian Heath - MC

Biography :

Educated at Sedbergh School and at McGill University in Canada, Ian Stock was a Rubber Planter in Malaya before the Second World War, and held a commission in the Federal Malay States Volunteer Reserve from 1937-41. On return to the UK, his FMSVR commission wasn't recognised so he worked his way through the ranks, enlisting in The Durham Light Infantry. He served in 14th DLI 08.02.1942-14.08.1942, and after officer training at 161 RMC OCTU was commissioned into the DLI in Dec 1942, serving initially in 10th DLI from 10.12.1942-05.09.1944, including in France from 9.6.1944. He served in 1st Leicesters from 05.09.1944-19.08.1945, and was awarded M.C. for his actions as Company Commander at Zetten, The Netherlands on 18 Jan 1944 (L.G. 3.5.1945). From 19.08.1945 until sometime in 1946 he served in 2nd Bn The Warwickshire Regiment, including in Palestine where he arrived in October 1945. He relinquished his commission on 29.9.1951. In addition to the three war medals, his MC and NW Europe Star, he received the Pacific Star medal in recognition of his time in the FMSVR.
In 1951 he returned to Malaya and rubber planting until 1958, then returned to the UK and was employed with ICI in their Registrar's Department. He died in London in 1975, aged 59.
