Campbell, Matthew Marshall - MBE JP

Biography :

Educated at Dumbarton Academy and Glasgow University (where he studied medicine), Matthew Marshall was commissioned into the RAMC at a Lt on 31.10.1942. Awarded the M.B.E. for his work as Medical Officer, 47 Column, 7th Leicesters (Chindits), Burma, 1944 (L.G. 26.4.1945). London Gazette incorrectly describes him as "Malcolm Marshall Campbell". After Chindit service, he was attached to The Black Watch training on landing craft. Then sent to Jakarta in Indonesia to evacuate civilian prisoners from Japanese concentration camps, whence to Egypt then Palestine ministering to troops tooking part in the policing action there. He was based in the King David hotel in Jerusalem, but was fortuitously round the corner when it was blown up by terrorists on 22.7.1946. Left the Army in 1947 in the rank of major. Become a GP in Cowie, Stirlingshire, Scotland, a Justice of the Peace, Chairman of the Community Council, and a church elder of Cowie Parish Church for over 50 years. A street in Cowie 'Doctor Campbell Avenue' was named after him in 1999 while he was alive. His medals are in The Black Watch Museum in Perth.
