Young, William Hales Wilkie
Rank : Major
Unit : 1st Bn, 7th Bn
Biography :
William Young was first commissioned in The Leicestershire Regiment in December 1896, and saw much fighting in the South African War, being with the 1st Battalion throughout the Siege of Ladysmith. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps Belfast, Siege of Ladysmith, and Laing's Nek. Promoted Captain 18.12.1907. During the First World War he was in France and Belgium from July 1915 to the end of the war, and during that time he served with 7th Bn and commanded the 1st/13th London Regiment, subsequently serving with the R.A.O.C.
He went to Natal to live when he retired, as he had liked the country very much when stationed at Pietermaritzburg with the 1st Battalion. He bought a small farm between that town and Estcourt and, not knowing much about agriculture, devoted most of his time to planting trees and to the conservation of soil. He became an authority on these subjects and was frequently consulted about them.
