Biography :
Arthur Yarnell made 2 appearances for Leicester FC's 1st XV in 1926/27. From the rank of Trooper in the Leicestershire Yeomanry he was commissioned 2nd Lt. in The Leicestershire Regiment (TA) on 28.5.1930 and served in 4th Bn. Promoted Lt on 28.5.1933. Resigned his commission and joined Supplementary Reserve on 10.6.1936. As a Captain in the Royal Signals he was awarded a Mention in Despatches for his work as a Company Commander and Regtl 2IC of 5 Corps Signal Regt in Tunisia and Italy (L.G. 24.8.1944). Awarded the O.B.E. as an Acting Colonel for his actions as CO, 13 Corps Signal Regt in Italy, from Jan 1945 (L.G. 13.12.1945). After the war he served as a Captain in the Royal Signals' Army Emergency Reserve until, having reached the age limit, he relinquished his commission on 24.10.1963, and was granted the hon. rank of Lt.-Col. He was awarded the Army Emergency Reserve Decoration and its 1st Clasp on 13.7.1971. He died on 1.9.1975, aged 66 years. In the photo he is wearing the uniform of the Royal Signals.
