Army Number : 9787

Unit : 1st Bn

Biography :

Horace Wragg enlisted in The Leicestershire Regiment in January 1913, and served in 1st Bn. Awarded the Military Medal during World War One as Sergeant 9787 (L.G. 11.5.1917). The Regimental History describes his action as follows: "The month of January 1917 was spent by 1st Leicesters by turns in the front line [in the Loos Sector] and at rest in Mazingarbe, furnishing working parties for the trenches; and on 30th-31st, a patrol sent out by the Battalion from the North Crater to investigate the enemy sap, encountered a small party of the enemy, who were evidently lying in wait to ambush the men of the patrol but were seriously discomfited. The patrol was composed of 2Lt W A Savage, Sgt Wragg and five men, and on the enemy opening rapid fire the officer was hit in the foot and was placed in a shell hole, while Sgt Wragg, having reorganised the party, proceeded to bomb the aggressors. One man was seen to run away and Sgt Wragg shot a second with his revolver. On advancing to the spot where fire had been opened by the enemy, nobody was seen, and Sgt Wragg then brought in his patrol, being highly commended for his conduct by Brig-Gen Feetham." Later served in India, Germany and Ceylon. Army number was changed to 4848595. Promoted to C.S.M. 1.5.1929. Left the 1st Bn at Multan, India in 1935 and worked in Birmingham.
