Withers, Joseph - MC DCM

Biography :

Joseph Withers joined The Leicestershire Regiment as Private 3250 on 15.10.1891, aged 18. Served in 1st Bn in the Boer war (winning the Distinguished Conduct Medal as Corporal (L.G. 27.9.1901). Was serving as Sergeant as at 1905. Was serving as Colour Sergeant with the 2nd Bn in India in 1907. Served in World War One, mainly in 2/4th Bn. From the rank of Sergeant Major he was promoted Lt Quartermaster on 29.10.1915. For his work as Capt QM in 14th Bn, he was awarded the Military Cross (L.G. 3.6.1919) and Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. He left the Regiment on 17.12.1929 as Captain and Quartermaster. Of his service, 19 years had been with the 4th Bn. His medals and a framed photograph are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
