The Express & Star of 26 September 1916 and the Midland Counties Express of 26 February 1916 both report on the death of Private George Wedge, of the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, of wounds received in action on January 6th. However, the name of this young man should actually read Enoch Wedge, as confirmed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and other sources.

Enoch Wedge was born in Wolverhampton in 1896, the son of Benjamin and Eliza Wedge. In 1901, they were living at Wood End, Wednesfield, together with Enoch’s sisters Amy, Eliza and Lily.

Assuming the remaining details in the newspaper article are correct, Enoch joined the Army in June 1914. He was discharged the following November, but re-enlisted pretty much straight away, and “escaped injury in any shape or form until he sustained the wounds from which he died.”
