Webb, Edward Arthur Harold

Biography :
Edward Webb was commissioned into the 17th Regiment as Ensign by Purchase 13.2.1866, Lieutenant 5.1.1870. Served in 2nd Bn in Canada (recipient of the Canada General Service Medal with Clasp 'Fenian Raid' 1866), and in Ireland, as Ensign. Transferred to 1st Bn and served in India and in the Afghan War (1878-9). Promoted Captain 15.7.1879. On 10.6.1881 he transferred to the Pay Corps, continuing as Paymaster. On 10.6.1886 was granted Honoroary Rank of Major, and on 27.2.1896 was promoted Staff Paymaster in the rank of Lt Col. He retired from the Army in 1901. He is the author of the 'History of the Services of the 17th (The Leicestershire) Regiment 1688-1910' revised 1912. Also author of 'Records of the 12th (Suffolk) Regiment of Foot', published 1923.
