Biography :

Served as Captain with 7th battalion in World War One. Listed by Commonwealth War Graves Commission as serving with 11th Bn. Killed 7.4.1918, aged 39. He is buried at Menin Road South Military Military Cemetery, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

His entry in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, 1914-1919 reads "Warren, Richard Dunn, Major, 7th (Service) Battn. The Leicestershire Regt., 3rd s. of the Rev. Charles Warren of Washingborough co. Lincoln : b. Grimsby, co. York, 17 March 1879: educ. Malvern Link: Eton, and at Hertford College, Oxford, out of which he passed first of the University candidates for the Army: gazetted 2nd Lieut. 2nd Battn. The Lincolnshire Regt, in 1899; served during the South African Warm 1899-1902 (Queen's and King's Medal, five clasps); retired in 1913; rejoined the Leicestershire Regt. in Oct. 1914 with the rank of Major; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders; subsequently proceeded to Salonika as Commanding Officer of the Connaught Rangers; was invalided home in 1917; on recovery returned to France, and was killed in action near Ypres 7 April 1918. Buried there. At Eton he was in the Mixed Wall XI, and ninth man for the Eights. While at Oxford obtained an Exhibition at Hertford College; rowed in the winning Four in the University race, and afterwards sixth in the Eights until he broke down with jaundice, and rowed in the finals at Henley for the Grand Challenge Cup in 1899. He m. at Goring-on-Thames, co. Oxford, 11 Aug 1917., Emily Cecile (Haydown, Goring, co. Oxford), dau. of the late Myles Lonsdale Formby."
