Walsh, George Inverarity

Biography :
George Walsh served with the Honourable Artillery Company until being commissioned into 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment in 1888. Promoted Lieutenant in 1892, Captain in 1898 and Major in 1904. As a captain he saw operational service in in Mashonaland under Sir Richard Martin in 189, where he was employed as a Special Service Officer and awarded a M.I.D. (L.G. 18.2.1898) and a British South Africa Medal 1890-97. He subsequently served in Boer War as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General in HQ 8th Division.and was again Mentioned in Despatches (L.G. 16.4.1901). Served as Adjutant of 1st Vol Bn The Royal Fusiliers 1901-06, and retired as a Major in 1908. Served as Staff Officer for Overseas Troops at the 1911 Coronation. He was a keen follower of the South Oxfordshire and South Berks hunts, and resided at Newnham Manor, Oxford. Died at his home 7.8.1913, aged 46. His medals were purchased by the Regiment in November 2014.
