Biography :
Educated at Marlborough College and RMA Sandhurst, 'Jimmy' Walker was commissioned into The Royal Leicestershire Regiment on 12.2.1954, and joined 1st Bn in Germany, working in D Company. He served in that Bn in The Sudan and in Cyprus. Along with his driver (Private R N Bowman), he was Killed in Phrenaros, near Famagusta, Cyprus, on 27.3.1956, aged 22 years.
He is buried in the village cemetery in Charlton Marshall, Dorset.
He is commemorated in a stained-glass widow in the Charlton Marshall Church; on the Cyprus Memorial in the Regimental Chapel in Leicester Cathedral; on The Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffs; and on the British Cyprus Memorial in the Old British Cemetery at Kyrenia, Cyprus.

'Lieut. Samuel James Gresham WALKER is one of the 371 British Servicemen who died on active service during the four-year Cyprus Emergency April 1 1955 to April 18 1959, and whose name is among those remembered with honour on the British Cyprus Memorial. Serving with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, aged 22 from Blandford Dorset, he and one of his men were both shot dead when their patrol was ambushed at Phrenaros on March 27 1956. Lieut 'Jimmy' Samuel James Gresham Walker from Blandford, Dorset, he and one of his men died when their patrol was ambushed at Prelates on March 27 1956. His driver received a gunshot wound causing the vehicle to crash and burst into flames killing Lieut Walker. He is buried at Charlton Marshall Church, Dorset. See Bowman below.

'Thursday 29th March, 1956: HQ Cyprus District
We regret to report the deaths the day before yesterday of: Lt SJG Walker, 'D' Company, 1st Bn The Royal Leicestershire Regiment - and - Pte RN Bowman, MT Platoon, 1st Bn The Royal Leicestershire Regiment. Lt Samuel 'Jim' Walker, of Blandford, Dorset, was leading a vehicle patrol, when it was ambushed at Prelates, a village some six miles southwest of Famagusta. Pte Ronald Bowman, of Appleby Magna, Burton on Trent, Derbyshire, the vehicle's driver, was killed instantly causing the conveyance to career into a nearby coffee shop where it burst into flames killing Lt Walker.'
