Biography :

Home address given as Cottingham, Leicestershire. Francis Tilley enlisted into 2nd Bn The Leicestershire Regiment at Market Harborough, Leicestershire, a few months before the First World War, and was en route to join the Bn in India when war broke out. He entered France on 12.10.1914, joining 1st Bn. As Lance Corporal he was wounded during operations 15.5.1915, and on another five occasions, the last time at Ypres on about 9.12.1917, which proved fatal as having suffered with multiple shrapnel wounds he was moved by rail to Abbeville Hospital where he Died of Wounds on 14.12.1917, aged 23. He was Mentioned in Despatches (The Green Tiger January 1918) and was awarded the Military Medal (L.G. 13.3.1918, page 3246). He is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France, and is commemorated on the Cottingham/Middleton War Memorial.
