Biography :
Educated at RMA Sandhurst, Alan Thompson was commissioned into The Royal Leicestershire Regiment on 4.8.1962. Served in 1st Bn in 1962-1964, in Watchet, Hong Kong, and Borneo. Won the M.C. for his actions as a 2Lt platoon commander in Sarawak September 1963-January 1964 (L.G. 21.4.1964). Served in 4th Bn The Royal Anglian Regiment (R Anglian) in Aden 1965. Instructor at Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion Oswestry in 66-68. Company Commander 4th R Anglian in Bahrain 1969-70. SO3 Intelligence, HQ 39 Infantry Brigade, Belfast (awarded M.B.E. L.G. 1.5.1973). Intelligence Officer 2nd R Anglian in Londonderry (awarded Mention in Despatches L.G. 17.6.1974). Student Army Staff College 1975. GSO2 Ops/Plans HQ Berlin (Br Sector) 1975-78. DAAG A AG2, Directorate of Manning (Army) 1980-81. CO 3rd R Anglian 1981-84 in Colchester and Belize. SO1 DS, BMATT Zimbabwe 1984-87. SO1 HQ Br Forces Hong Kong 1987-88. Chief of Staff HQ Western District, Shrewsbury 1988-91 (Colonel 30.6.1988). Commandant Small Arms Wing, School of Infantry, Warminster 1991-94. Deputy Commander Tidworth Garrison 1994-97. Retired from the Army in 1997.
