Home address given as Derby. Elias Smith joined 2nd Bn The Leicestershire Regiment in India. He entered France in 2nd Bn on 12.10.1914. Appointed Acting Paid Lance Corporal 26.4.1915. Appointed Corporal in August 1915. Wounded in action on 25.9.1915. Promoted to Sergeant 25.9.1915. Awarded the D.C.M. as a Sergeant in Mesopotamia (L.G. 30.3.1916: "For conspicuous gallantry on several occasions, notably when he led his men in an assault under heavy fire, repeatedly rallying them until he was himself badly wounded."). Later as a CSM he was awarded the M.M.(L.G. 22.2.1918 page 2430). His medal (D.C.M.) is held by the Museum.
