Biography :
Charles Smith initially served in The Northumberland Fusiliers as Sergeant 3/9347. In the rank of CSM he was awarded the D.C.M. (L.G. 25.8.1917: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading a party forward with the greatest promptitude and determination, through machine gun fire, to outflank the enemy and enable our advance to continue. Although wounded, he continued to do excellent work during the subsequent consolidation."). He was commissioned 2Lt in The Leicestershire Regiment on 29.5.1918, and served with the 1st Bn. He was Killed in Action near Bohain on 19.9.1918, aged 27. He is buried at Chapelle British Cemetery, Holnon, Aisne, France.
