Biography :

Arthur Slater enlisted in 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment on 31.10.1911. He served in it during World War One, entering France on 9.9.1914 as Private. As an Acting Sergeant, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (London Gazette 30.3.1916: "For conspicuous gallantry when repeatedly repairing telephone wires by day and night under heavy fire. He also carried in wounded men over open ground under heavy rifle fire at close range."). He was also mustard gassed, he survived. He was discharged on 14.2.1919. This medal is in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
He died in 1947.
