Biography :
An Irishman, he first enlisted into the Free State Army but later enlisted into the British Army, joining The King's Regiment in 1930. He later transferred to The Leicestershire Regiment, serving in 2nd Bn until 1943, reaching the rank of CSgt. He was an outstanding all round athlete but it was in boxing that he excelled. He not only represented his Battalion on many occa5ions, but as Army Welter-weight Champion represented the Army in many International and Inter-Services Competitions. In 1943 he was commissioned as General List. For his work as Camp Commandant and QM, Civil Affairs School Chrea, QM HQ 15th Army Group, and OC British Detachment at HQ Allied Control Commission, Italy 1943-44 he was awarded the M.B.E. in 1945. He was rebadged R Leicesters in 1947, and served ERE in Burma. He served as QM of 1st Bn in Iserlohn (Germany) 1952-53. He died after falling ill refereeing a boxing match.
