Biography :

Educated at Ashby Grammar School, Frederic Scott sojourned as a trainee teacher at Bridge Road School Coalville and then went on to Cambridge University in 1913. In July 1914 he was a cadet in the University‘s Officer Training Corps from where he was commissioned 2Lt into The Leicestershire Regiment on 27.10.1916. Served initially with the 6th Battalion. In the early winter of 1915 the Battalion were in trenches at Monchy au Bois, just north of the Somme and Frederic and his men were suffering terribly. What with enemy mortars and winter rains that necessitated wading waist deep in foul water, together with bitter frosts. On 26.12.1915 Frederic was hit in the left eye by a bullet deflected off a shovel. An operation was performed at Rouen and then he was moved to London. By March 1916 he had recovered and was back with the 9th Battalion. He was wounded again, this time whilst leading his men on 14.7.1916 at the Battle of Bazentin Ridge. A bullet went through his arm which resulted in hospitalisation and home convalescence. The surgeon explained it was crippling, and there was no requirement for him to continue as a front-line officer. Nevertheless he felt a responsibility to his men and returned on 26th October. The following spring, he was wounded for the third time whilst showing outstanding bravery and leadership on 3.5.1917. He was awarded the M.C. (L.G. 17.7.1917) "For conspicuous gallantry during an attack. Although badly shaken by a bursting shell, he collected thirty men and dug himself in in a forward position, holding it under heavy fire for a day and night. He was wounded, but refused attention until he had withdrawn his party." Promoted Captain on 28.2.1918. Killed in Action while serving with 9th Battalion near Cormicy on the first day of the Battle of the Aisne on 27.5.1918, aged 25. He is commemorated on Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France. He was a Freemason.
