Biography :
Educated at Wellington College, Berks, and RMC Sandhurst, 'Jumbo' Sandars was commissioned into The Durham Light Infantry on 30.8.1923, posted to 1st Bn at home. In 1925 he left for India and 2nd Bn, serving at Cawnpore, Shanghai (Signals Officer) and Waziristan (Intelligence Officer), and then Adjutant. He played polo and was a hurdler at athletics. On returning to England in 1934 he became a Staff Captain in HQ Aldershot District, and in the rank of captain attended Staff College, Camberley 1937-38. After the outbreak of war in 1939 and until the invasion of Normandy, he held various staff appointments, was GSO 1 in Northern Command at York, commanded the 11th DLI, and then took 10th DLI to France as part of 70 Brigade in 49 Division. Awarded the DSO for actions commanding 10th DLI at Mesnil Mauger, France, on 10.8.1944 (L.G. 21.12.1944). Commanded 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment 9.1944 to 22.5.1945 during which he was awarded Bar to DSO for actions at Wuustwezel, Belgium, on 21.10.1944 (L.G. 1.3.1945). Later awarded Liberty Medal (Norway) as Brigadier commanding 304th Inf Bde, Tromso, Norway, 1945 (L.G.17.10.1946). In the years that followed he commanded the Berlin Infantry Brigade, attended the Imperial Defence College, and had a tour in the War Office in the Adjutant General's Branch. He was ADC to Her Majesty The Queen from Jul 1954 to Oct 1955, when he retired.
